Site background: Pre-1960s, there was a manufactured gas plant (MGP) that cooked coal to make gas. This gas was then distributed around Athens. These sites were very popular before the advent of natural gas. Sites similar to this one exist all over the United States. Cyanide was used to purify the gas and then it was dumped out onto the soil.
